Abstract:Effects of different waterborne mercury(Hg2+)(0,10,50,100,200,300 μg/L)on accumulation of mercury in the gills of juvenile Eriocheir sinensis were studied by singe gradient factor experiments.Gills of E.sinensis accumulated mercury rapidly from water environment after 40 days' exposed period.The contents of mercury in gills were 4.56,25.53 and 46.51 μg/g dry weight in 10,50 and 100 μg/L Hg2+ waterborne groups,whose values were significantly(P<0.05)higher than control groups.The contents of mercury were 183.75 and 283.36 μg/g dry weight in 200 and 300 μg/L Hg2+ groups and the accumulation rate attained to 910.35 and 939.60.Light microscopic examination showed that the histoarchitecture of gills were changed greatly in low Hg2+ level groups,the changes included the epithelial cells distended,the gill lamellae enlarged,the tips of gill filament swelled seriously.In the 300 μg/L groups,the normal structures of the whole gill lamellae were destroyed completely.The correlation of the accumulation of mercury in gills of E.sinensis to the concentrations of Hg2+ in water was analyzed by biostatistics method,and showed that there was dramatic correlation between them.Exposure to high concentrations groups Hg2+(mercury chloride)was found to result in several alterations in the histoarchitecture of the gills of E.sinensis,and such alterations could affect vital physiological functions,such as respiration,osmotic and ionic regulations of gills,which in turn could ultimately affect the survival and growth of E.sinensis.

Abstract:We determined 35 complete mitochondrial control region sequences of Coilia nasus from 3 populations,which included Jiuduansha area(JJ)in Yangtze River estuary,Qiantangjiang River estuary(QT)and Zhoushan Island(ZS),to analyze their sequence variation and genetic structure.Sequence lengths of the control region in individuals of C.nasus were 1 214-1 291 bp,which revealed that the control region sequence of C.nasus had length polymorphism.Sequence length polymorphism caused mainly by one or two times of 38 bp of "CTA TGT ATT ATA TTA CAT ATA TTA TGG TAT AGT ACA TA" segment repeats.Genetic structure analysis showed a high level genetic diversity of C.nasus(h=0.998 3,π=0.026 2),which indicated that C.nasus had high evolutionary potential.The high level of Nm values(9.90-40.62)and very low F_ST values(0.012-0.053),the average K 2-P distances,as well as the AMOVA analysis all revealed that the C.nasus around Yangtze River estuary had no obviously geographical differentiation.However,the phylogenetic tree estimated by neighbor-joining(NJ)methods indicated that the individuals of C.nasus formed two monophyletic lineages,and the two lineages without correlation with geographical populations.Based on molecular clock theory,the two lineages might share a common ancestor approximately 35-47 thousand years ago.

Abstract:Immunohistochemical and morphometric methods were used in the present study to investigate the distribution and senescence-related changes of GFAP-immunoreactivity(IR)in the retina of lizard Gekko swinhonis.The results showed that the GFAP-IR was mainly localized in the vitread endfeet and inner part of the radial trunks of the Müller cells through tout the retina.Compared with adult lizards,the old lizards had a significant increase in the optical density(OD)and the percentage of GFAP-IR in the retinas.At the same time,the GFAP-IR Müller cells in the old lizards showed shorter minor diameters.All the results suggest that Müller cells probably participate in the senescencing processes of the retina by the mediation of the higher GFAP expression and lower decompositon.

Abstract:Polymerase chain reaction and direct sequencing methods were used to analyze the genetic variation between Bambusicola thoracica and B.fytchii.A total of 1 142 nucleotides of the mitochondrial DNA control region were sequenced.There are 32 variable positions,with 20 transitions and 10 transversions.The nucleotide composition of B.thoracica mtDNA D-loop was:34.26% T,25.98% C,24.84% A and 14.96% G.That of B.fytchii was:34.47% T,25.60% C,25.03% A and 14.93% G.There were very significant differences in T and C nucleotide composition between the two bamboo partridges.The phylogenetic tree grouped two bamboo partridges into two deeply divergent clusters(supported by BP=100%).Genetic distance was 0.039 6 between the two partridges.Calibrated rates of molecular evolution suggested that they could have speciated 2.00 million years ago,affected by the Pleistocene second frigid.

Abstract:Activin plays an essential role in the neuroprotection as a nerve survival factor.Activin receptor-interacting protein1(ARIP1)has been recently discovered in mouse brain as a regulator of activin signal transduction,however,its distribution pattern is not well characterized.In this study,the expression of ARIP1 mRNA and localization of mature ARIP1 protein in mouse tissues were examined by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR)and immunohistochemistry,respectively.ARIP1 mRNA expression was detectable in cerebrum,cerebellum,extra-brain tissues such as pituitary,adrenal gland and testis.Immunohistochemical analysis showed that ARIP1-like immunoreactivity protein was mainly localized in hypothalamus and hippocampus of the cerebrum,Purkinje cells of the cerebellum,neurohypophysis and basophilic cells of adenohypophysis of the pituitary,adrenal cortex of the suprarenal gland,and Leydig cells of the testis.These data suggest that ARIP1 may participate in not only the regulation of activin signal transduction of nerve cells,but also the regulation of function in neural endocrine gland.

Abstract:By means of switching mechanism at 5' end of RNA transcript(SMART)technology,single matured porcine MⅡ oocyte cDNAs were amplified.Meanwhile,the mRNA was amplified from the single porcine oocyte cDNA products using T7 RNA polymerase based in vitro transcription technology(IVT),and the aRNA concentration reached 1.962 μg.Smart technology combined with IVT technology,mRNA has augmented 2.3×104 times,and this amount could meet the cDNA array and other high throughput screening requirements.Based on this research,a feasible platform has been established to carry out high throughput screening researches for precious and rare biological materials.

Abstract:Energy intake of Black-necked Bar-tailed Pheasants(Syrmaticus humiae),was measured in biological garden of Guangxi Normal University from Oct.2005 to Sep.2006.Six 4-year adults and six juveniles kept in cage were involved this experiment.The amount of food taken by pheasants was calculated by subtract the remaining from the food provided every day.All the excrements of trial pheasants were daily collected.The energy contained in the food and excrements was measured to get the net energy intake.The results showed that the gross energy consumption,metabolic energy and excrement energy varied seasonally and that was increase as temperature decreasing.There is significant difference in gross energy consumption,metabolic energy,excrement energy between adults and juveniles.There is a trend that the food digestibility of pheasants was increases as temperature increasing.In the same season,the food digestibility of adults was higher than that of juveniles.A minimum metabolic energy was detected in the 4-year adults and juveniles group in August.A further study is need to determine whether 30℃ is the optimal temperature for the Black-necked Bar-tailed Pheasants.

Abstract:To explore the patterns and functions of bridging behavior,we studied the bridging behavior of YA1 colony of Tibetan Macaque(Macaca thibetana)from March to May in 2007 at Mt.Huangshan,Anhui Province,China.The results indicated that the frequency of this behavior was significantly different at different time period(t=3.912,df=10,P<0.01).Adult male monkeys were the main doers(Z=-2.188 8,P<0.05)and recipients(Z=-2.523 8,P<0.05)of bridging process.Within the same age group,sex didn't influence rates of initiating(Z=-1.755,P>0.05)but did influence rates of receiving(Z=-2.201,P<0.05).Bridging partners mainly used infants(F=6.735,df=2,P<0.05)as the bridging medium and preferred to using male infants(Z=-2.437,P<0.05).Moreover,mothers' social rank influenced frequency of their infants used as bridging medium in bridging process(Z=-3.724,P<0.01);partners mostly used high-ranking mothers' infants.Males(F=2.947,df=4,P<0.05)and females(F=5.320,df=4,P<0.05)mostly performs pattern Ⅰ bridging behavior.Females usually chose relatives as the bridging medium(Z=-2.490,P<0.05),but males didn't show obvious selectivity for the maternal offsprings(Z=-0.866,P>0.05).In conclusion,the short-term research indicate that social bridging behavior in Tibetan Macaques social group mainly occurs in pattern Ⅰ and it has function of alleviation the competing pressure among individuals.The kinship may not be the primary factor affecting choosing the bridging behavior medium.

Abstract:In order to optimize the protocols for Cynomolgus Monkey(Macaca fascicularis)sperm cryopreservation,the effects of glycerol concentration [3%,5%,7% and 11%(v/v)] and equilibration time(10,30,60 and 90 min)on cryopreservation of spermatozoa of Cynomolgus Monkey were studied.A modified TTE(mTTE)dilution solution was used and the sperm motility,morphology,membrane integrity and acrosome integrity were examined before freezing and post-thawing.When 30 min equilibration was applied,the post-thawing motility and recovery rates was significantly higher than those when 90 min or 120 min equilibration(P<0.05).The effect of 30 min equilibration was also better than that of 60 min equilibration.The post-thawing motility and recovery rate of spermatozoa was significantly higher(P<0.05)for 3% and 5% glycerol groups than those for 11% glycerol group,and the effect of 3% and 5% glycerol was also better than 7% glycerol.The different glycerol concentrations and equilibration time showed similar effects on the membrane integrity,acrosomal integrity and malformation rate(P<0.05).The results suggest that addition of 3% or 5% glycerol and 30 min equilibration are beneficial for freezing Cynomolgus Monkey spermatozoa.

Abstract:The bird species and population size at four sampled fish ponds were recorded in Hongzehu Lake Wetland(33°06'-33°07'N,118°29'-118°30'E)in two winters(2005 and 2006),and one spring(2006).The size of four fish ponds was 157 hm2.Total of 19 species of wader birds were recorded during the study period,10 species in winter and 15 species in spring respectively.The quantity of wader birds occurred in winter was much higher than that in spring.The population size of the four major species varied dramatically during their staying period,which indicates that they are on the way of migration.Two behaviors,resting and foraging,were occurred observed at naked mud and shallow water area.The special fishing pattern at the ponds provides winter habitats for the waders.

Abstract:Macrozoobenthic community was investigated seasonally at 12 sampling stations in Lake Nanyi of Anhui,from July 2002 to July 2004 for providing academic data for rational utilization of aquatic resources and ecological strategy for fishery resources.A total of 39 species were obtained.The highest biomass and density were presented in the winter of 2003 and the lowest density in the summer of 2004.Mollusca was by far the most dominant group,its dominant species were Corbicula fluminea,Bellamya purificata,B.aeruginosa and Alocinma longicornis.The annual average value of Shannon-Wiener diversity index,Margalef diversity index and Pielou index were 0.83,0.51 and 0.77 respectively.The results showed that the species number,biodiversity,standing stock of macrozoobenthos community were much higher in the west area than in the east area of the lake.After the construction of a reservoir,the ecological characteristics of macrozoobenthos in the lake changes very much,which results in the significant drop of the standing stock of the macrozoobenthos.

Abstract:Zhongshan City,located in the delta of Pearl River in Guangdong Province,covers an area of 1 800 km2,with various water bodies including rivers,streams,reservoirs and ponds.Previously,the fauna of freshwater Oligochaeta in this area has not been studied.Based on the surveys in 16 water bodies conducted in June and December,2005,a total of 31 species(including 19 species new to Guangdong Province)of aquatic oligochaetes belonging to 16 genera and 4 families are recorded from Zhongshan City.Faunistic analysis has shown that Zhongshan area has more thermophilus species than northern areas of China.Aulophorus flabelliger of Naididae is recorded from China for the first time,and described as follows.Aulophorus flabelliger Stephenson,1931(Fig.2)Material:IHB GD2005006a-b,two whole-mounted specimens;IHB GD2005006c-d,two glycerine-mounted specimens;GD2005006e,one specimen in 10% formalin;all from plant roots in Beitaiyong stream(22°26'29.7″N,113°22'34.9″E)of Zhongshan in June,2005.The specimens are deposited in the Institute of Hydrobiology(IHB),Chinese Academy of Sciences,in Wuhan,China.,Description:Five complete preserved specimens about 3 mm long,0.18 mm wide,21-26 segments.Body was transparent.No eyes.Dorsal chaetae from VI onwards.1 hair per bundle,72-76 μm long.1 palmate needle per bundle,44-48 μm long,2.7-2.9 μm thick,with nodulus distal;teeth strongly diverging,maximally 12 μm wide,distal one 12 μm long and proximal 10 μm long,with web and 20-25 intermediate teeth.Ventral bifids of Ⅱ-Ⅴ 3-5 per bundle,90-102 μm long,2.4-2.5 μm thick,longer and thinner than the rest,with nodulus proximal;distal tooth 5.0 μm long and proximal 2.9 μm long.Those following 3-4 per bundle,44-52 μm long,1.9 μm thick,with nodulus distal;distal tooth much shorter and thinner than proximal(1.5 μm∶2.9 μm in length,0.7 μm∶2.1 μm in base thickness).Branchial fossa with 3 pairs of long,cylindrical gills,and a pair of finger-like parallel palps.Portable tube about 4 mm long,0.24 mm wide,delicate and transparent.Remarks:This tropical species was originally described from Kenya[18],and subsequently reported from Somalia[14],Australia[12],India[15] and southern USA[13].Our material conforms to the previous descriptions(op.cit.)in most aspects,but needles are different to some extent(Table 2).Under an oil immersion objective,needles of our specimens were found to have numerous intermediate teeth,which have not been mentioned before.The forms of specimens from Somalia and India were reported to have web indentations near distal teeth of needles,and those from Kenya,Australia and USA near proximal teeth.The authors are of the opinion that the difference in needles is a matter of observation,for the numerous teeth are rather difficult to be distinguished from the web;under a 40× objective,the needles of Zhongshan worms were similar to the published drawings.In addition,hairs and needles of the present specimens are somewhat shorter than those in the previous descriptions.Distribution and habitat:Zhongshan of South China(new record),India,East Africa(Kenya,Somalia),Australia,and USA(Louisiana);all tropical and subtropical regions(31°N-29°S).Decomposing roots of water-plant in ponds and streams.

Abstract:The ultrastructure of the spermatozoon was examined with electron microscopy in Patinopecten yessoensis.The spermatozoon is typically primitive,with its body length and head length about 50 μm and 3 μm,respectively.The mature spermatozoon consists of head,mid-piece and tail.The acrosome is in upside-down V-shape.The nucleus,which consists of major part of the head,is egg-shaped with high density.It contains anterior nuclear fossa,posterior nuclear fossa and implantation fossa;the centriolar complex which is surrounded by 4-5 oval-shaped mitochondria,forms the mid-piece.The flagellum is a typical "9+2" microtubular structure.

Abstract:To isolate and purify peripheral blood lymphocyte-like cells from the arctic lamprey,Lampetra japonica,centrifugation on Ficoll-Paque was performed and a uniform population of leucocytes containing lymphocyte-like cells with the mixture of Ficoll-Urografin solution at proportion of 1.092 was yielded.With the FSC and SSC character of the cells on flow cytometer,lymphocyte-like cells were separated successfully,and the purity was 95.68%.About 2.4×106 lymphocyte-like cells could be purified from 1 ml peripheral blood.Under TEM,lymphocyte-like cells were round or ellipse in shape without microvilla.There were mitochondria with cristae,rough endoplasmic reticulum,dissociated ribosomes and vacuoles in the cytoplasm.Lymphocyte differentiation analysis revealed that there was no evident differentiation of T and B lymphocytes in the leucocytes of L.japonica.

Abstract:Green Sunfish,Lepomis cyanellus,is a kind of small fresh-water fish introduced by Guangdong Province in 1997 from North America.Gonadal development of this species was studied by light microscopy.The developmental chronology of gonad is composed of 5 stages.At the age of 1 month,ovaries and testes were at stage Ⅰ,and both gonads developed to stage Ⅱ at the age of 2-3 months.Ovaries and testes developed to stage Ⅲ and stage Ⅳ respectively by 4 months and 5-6 months.The first maturity age was 7-8 months.During the winter,ovaries degenerated to stages Ⅱ-Ⅲ,and testes still stayed at stage Ⅴ.The maturation coefficient of matured ovaries was 2.80%-8.10%,and that of matured testes was 1.45%-3.45%.The development of ovaries and testes was asynchronous.This species spawn repeatedly and the spawning period lasts from March to November in Guangzhou region.The reason for this species' slow growth and the feasibility of L.cyanellus as an experimental model animal were discussed in this paper.

Abstract:The muscle nutritional composition of Gymnocypris przewalskii was measured by conventional biochemistry methods.The result indicated that the content of fat in the muscle of G.przewalskii was significant(P<0.05)higher in Dan-shui area than in the other five ones;the protein content was also much higher in Dan-shui area than in Hei-ma area(P<0.05).So it was concluded that there were some differences in nutritional components of G.przewalskii in different regions.As a whole,the contents of protein,fat and ash were 17.26%-18.87%,1.51%-3.37% and 1.42%-1.61% respectively.And the content of total amino acids was from 15.48% to 17.16%.The ratios of essential amino acids were 6.38%-7.05%,and delicious amino acids were 5.82%-6.49%.The contents of protein,essential amino acids and delicious amino acids were obviously high in G.przewalskii muscle.The quality of G.przewalskii in Dan-shui was the best among the five areas,which may be attributed to its growth environment.

Abstract:The present paper deals with the ratio of flesh in whole body and analysis of the nutritive composition,energy and amino acids of muscle in Carassius auratus var.dongtingking,an endemic fish living in the edge of Dongting Lake,based on 15 individuals collected from the Beiming Lake at Hunan Lixian in Mainland China in 2002.It was showed that the ratio of flesh to body was 52.18%,the ratio of gill in whole body was only 4.03%;analysis results of the nutritive composition(%,wet)were that:the moisture of muscle was 78.14%,protein 18.63%,fat 1.51%,ash 1.22%.The content of energy was 5.09 kJ/g,E/P was 27.32 kJ/g.A total of 17 common amino acids and 9 essential amino acids for human needs can be found in muscle.The total content of amino acids was 866.12 mg/g(dry);the content of essential amino acids was 48.21%;essential amino acids gram to total nitrogen gram(E/TN)was 2.81.By nutrition evaluation for the amino acids in muscle to human needs,the content of 4 kinds delicious amino acids was 50.39%;according to the amino acids score(AAS),the first limited amino acid was Met and Cys and the second limited amino acid was Val.;on the basis of chemical score(CS),the first and second limited amino acids was the same as the ASS.The results shows that the contents and composition of amino acids in muscle of C.a.var.dongtingking differ with those in three species Crucian Carp(C.a.var.pengze,C.a.var.allogynogenetic and C.a.var.pingxing red).

Abstract:Sperm shape of 7 species(subspecies)of the genus Bufo was observed by light and scanning electron microscope,and the size of spermatozoa were also measured.The results show that the sperm from the 7 species(subspecies)are basically similar in shape:the sperm are composed of head,mid-piece and tail;the head is thin,long and slightly curved;the mid-piece is relatively evident,and the tail is long and winding with an undulating membrane.The shape of spermatozoa from genus Bufo differs remarkably from that of other families of Anura,but is more similar to that of Urodela.The spermatozoa differ in morphology and size among different families of Amphibia,and the diversity of sperm morphology of Amphibia might be related to their different reproductive modes.

Abstract:Tract morphological characteristics of four passerine birds were observed.Specimens were live-trapped with net in Qiqihar City,Heilongjiang Province during May and June,2004.All specimens were kept laboratory with mean temperature was 21℃(15-29℃)under natural photoperiod before the examination was conducted.Food and water were supplied ad lib.Sex of each specimen was recorded and body weight was taken.The entire digestive tract of each bird was removed carefully and separated from the connective tissues and lipids.The lengths of stomach,small intestine and rectum were scaled to the nearest 1 mm and the weights of each part of a tract were measured to the nearest 0.1 mg.In order to remove the effect of body mass,analysis of covariance was used to analyze the data,using body mass as the covariate,and followed by least significant difference multiple comparisons.The results showed that the total length,total empty weight and total dry weight of alimentary,stomach empty weight and stomach dry weight,small intestine length,small intestine empty weight and small intestine dry weight,and rectum length,rectum empty weight and rectum dry weight among these species had significant different.The granivorous,Carpodacus erythrinus,had the longest length of digestive tract(the length of stomach excluded).The tracts of the other three omnivorous/insectivorous species(Emberiza rutila,Luscinia calliope and Ficedula parva)varied.The insectivorous species(L.calliope and F.parva)had relative heavy digestive tracts among the four species.The results show that the different features of gut morphology among these species are a functional adaptation of the different food habits.

Abstract:Bird resource of Guangzhou was surveyed in four sampling region along fixed line transects from April,2005 to December,2006.Totally,251 bird species were recorded belonging to 54 families and 18 orders.It took up 18.86% of the bird species recorded in China.Of which,22 birds are listed as grade Ⅱ key state-protected species,and one as grade Ⅰ key state-protected species.One hundred and twenty three birds are residents,88 are winter visitors,37 are summer visitors,38 are passage migrants and 8 are vagrant visitors.Among four sampling regions,forestry region has the highest bird species(164)with a highest Shannon-Wiener index(3.395),while wetland region has the lowest species(105)and Shannon-Wiener index(2.407).City region has 116 bird species and Shannon-Wiener index is 3.008.Farmland and scrub region has 147 birds and Shannon-Wiener index is 3.250.The species richness is highest in March(130)and lease in June(99),and 102 and 126 in September and December respectively.Shannon-Wiener index is lowest(2.424)in December,and similar(3.550-3.650)among other months.Hence,we concluded that:(1)Guangzhou has high richness in bird species.The bird list of Guangzhou could be over 300 species combining the expert knowledge and other information resource.(2)Systematic survey in a large scale is important for the understanding of biodiversity in a region.However,it is so rare at present.This situation it should be considered.(3)The difference of bird diversity among four regions and seasons shows that birds had affected by urbanization in Guangzhou.(4)Guangzhou is one of important regions for migrant birds in China.

Abstract:The surveys on the bird resources were carried out with the methods of sample point and line transect from 2005 to 2006 in four habitats in Xilinhe Wetland,Inner Mongolia,China.Total of 97 bird species belonging to 12 orders,33 families were recorded.Among them,11 species(11.34%)are residents,68(70.10%)species are summer visitors,15 species(15.46%)are migrants,and 3 species(3.09%)are winter visitors,respectively.In addition,3 species are rank Ⅰnationally protected birds,12 species are rank Ⅱ nationally protected birds.Seventy nine species are breeders,which forms the major party of the bird community in the study area,of 68 of them belongs to boreal taxa,which account for 86.08% of all breeders.It obviously reflects the feature of Palearctic realm of the bird community in the study area.

Abstract:The nutritional composition in muscle of two Bottlenose Dolphins(Tursiops truncatus)was determined.Samples were taken from thorax,back,belly and tail.The results showed that the difference of crude nutritional composition was very little except for the content of lipids,which was higher in belly and tail than in other place.Content of essential amino acids was much higher in back and thorax than in other position,but ratio of E/T is surprisingly similar.Glu was highest and Csy was lowest among 18 amino acids.There has not significant difference for fatty acids composition in different samples.Typical fatty acids were found in the major part of both specimens,such as palmitic(16:0),palm oleic acid(16:1),stearic(18:0),oleic(18:1),EPA(20:5 ω-3)and DHA(22:6 ω-3).SAF was very close to MUFA in amount,and higher than PUFA.The ratio of polyenes ω-3/ω-6 was normally lower than other marine organisms.Muscle of dolphins was rich in Ca,Fe and trace metals such as Zn,Cu,Mn,Se.

Abstract:The kinetic changes in the expression of neuroglobin(NGB)in mouse hippocampus after transient forebrain ischemia-reperfusion at different time points were investigated and the significance of these changes was discussed.The C57BL/6 mice model of ischemia-reperfusion was established by transient occlusion double side carotid artery under micromanipulation.RT-PCR was used to detect the dynamic changes in NGB mRNA expression(transcription level)and Western blotting was used to detect the dynamic changes in NGB protein expression(translation level).The results demonstrated that,compared with sham-operated control group(100±0.00),the expression of NGB mRNA increased initially at 6 h after reperfusion(132.59±28.26,P <0.05),reached a peak at 24 h(157.36±13.85,P<0.001),degraded since 48 h(146.55±23.17,P<0.01)and the expression of NGB mRNA dramatically dropped down nearly to normal level at 72 h(118.42±34.23,P>0.05)after reperfusion.A similar tendency was found in the expression of NGB protein compared with sham-operated control group(100±0.00).The NGB protein increased little at 6 h after reperfusion(111.46±23.54,P>0.05),reached a peak at 24 h(141.25±32.12,P<0.01)and degraded since 48 h(138.02±19.68,P<0.05).The expression of NGB protein dramatically dropped down to nearly normal level at 72 h(119.29±35.18,P>0.05)after reperfusion.The results indicate that the increased expression of NGB mRNA and protein at different phase point after reperfusion might be an irritable protective effects against ischemia-reperfusion brain damage,but the duration of its expression is short(within 48 h).

Abstract:Light microscopy,scanning electron microscopy and microvascular casting technique were used to observe the renal tissue structure and microvasculature in the Panthera pardus.The results showed that the thickness ratio between substantia corticalis and substantia medullaris of the renal was 1∶(1.5-3.0).The proximal tubular epithelium was simple cuboidal,with strong eosinophilic cytoplasm.The boundary between big and closely-arranged epithelial cells was not clear.Brush border was observed inside proximal tubule but not distal tubule.The distal tubular epithelial cells were low columnar cells with weak eosinophilic cytoplasm.The nucleus was located in the middle of the cell.The epithelial cells of collecting tubule with weak eosinophilic staining were closely arranged and the lumen of collecting tubule was big.The renal glomus was spheroidal in shape,and its diameter was 99-142 μm.The diameter of afferent glomerular arteriole was 13-15 μm.The diameter of efferent glomerular arteriole was 9.5-11.5 μm.

Abstract:The Eurasian Red Squirrel(Sciurus vulgaris),an omnivorous rodent in forests,distributes widely in Eurasia.In Europe,its population size decreased rapidly due to invading of Eastern Grey Squirrels(S.carolinensis).Therefore,the ecology of Eurasian Red Squirrels was concerned and intensively studied.In China,the ecological research on the Eurasian Red Squirrels focused on their hoarding behavior.This paper reviewed the achievements of ecological studies on autecology,population ecology,interspecific relationship and behavior ecology.Eurasian Red Squirrel can be used as a valuable model in mammalian ecological studies.For the further researches,the following fields should be focus on:(1)comparative ecology at different distribution regions,(2)role of Eurasian Red Squirrels in the natural forest regeneration,(3)metapopulation dynamics and its response to habitat fragmentation,(4)molecular phylogeography,and(5)as an experimental species in landscape management.
