Identification of Balaenoptera omurai (Balaenopteridae) from Shanghai Seas by Using mtDNA Gene Sequences

    Abstract:

    The portions of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) Cyt b gene (330 bp, GenBank accession: MK295815), cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COⅠ) (206 bp, GenBank accession: MK317953) and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region (231 bp, GenBank accession: MK317954) of the skeleton sample from a dead baleen whale collected at the Shanghai seas were sequenced. The blasting result in GenBank shows that the three sequences have maximal similarity at 100% with those of Balaenoptera omurai (Table 1﹣3); and the phylogenetic trees based on maximum likelihood are consistent with the blasting result (Fig. 5﹣7). The result shows that the sample should be identified as B. omurai, and it is recorded for the first time from Shanghai Seas.
