Abstract:On June 16, 2025, a specimen of the genus Boulenophrys (voucher number:JSU HJ2025005) was collected in Sanquan Town, Nanchuan District, Chongqing. Through morphological comparison and molecular phylogenetic analysis (Table 1, Figs. 1 ~ 3), the specimen was identified as Boulenophrys shuichengensis, representing a new amphibian species record for Chongqing. The calculated uncorrected p-distances between this specimen and B. shuichengensis from Dafang County, Guizhou Province were 0.00% and 0.98% based on the mitochondrial 16S rRNA and COI gene sequences, respectively (Tables 2 and 4). A phylogenetic tree reconstructed from the combined mitochondrial dataset (16S rRNA, 12S rRNA, and COI genes) revealed that B. shuichengensis formed a sister relationship with B. caudoprocta, and then the two species clustered into a clade with B. liboensis, B. boettgeri, and B. mufumontana, indicating their close phylogenetic relationships (Fig. 3). The discovery of this new distribution record of B. shuichengensis enhances our understanding of the amphibian diversity in Chongqing and provides valuable new data for future research on the taxonomy, biogeography, and conservation of this species.
