Abstract:[Objectives] The East Asian-Australasian Flyway is one of the nine major migratory routes for birds worldwide. Understanding the migratory ecology of key species along this flyway is crucial for clarifying population dynamics and developing effective conservation strategies. This study analyzed the migratory behavior of breeding Eurasian Oystercatchers (Haematopus ostralegus) in the Liaohekou National Nature Reserve, focusing on their migration routes, timing, activity ranges, and habitat use, aiming to determine their migratory type and provide a scientific basis for conservation and management along China’s eastern coast. [Methods] This study integrated satellite tracking, ArcGIS 10.2, and R 4.4.1 techniques to comprehensively reconstruct and analyze the migration process of breeding Eurasian Oystercatchers in the Liaohekou National Nature Reserve. Individual trajectories were extracted and key migration parameters calculated. The dynamic Brownian Bridge Movement Model (dBBMM) was adopted to estimate home range areas at 95%, 90%, and 50% confidence levels, with areas measured in ArcGIS 10.2. Land cover classification was performed based on ENVI, followed by plotting habitat land use composition bar charts in R 4.4.1 and generating spatial distribution maps in ArcGIS 10.2. All migration metrics were first examined for normality by the Shapiro-Wilk test and for homogeneity of variance by the Levene test. Metrics meeting normality and homogeneity assumptions were analyzed through independent samples t-tests or one-way ANOVA, while non-parametric tests were applied otherwise. Habitat use difference analyses were consistent with migration characteristic analyses. [Results] Analysis of satellite tracking data from four individuals between 2021 and 2024 showed that birds exhibited short migration distance, averaging 797.8 ± 212.2 km, with primary wintering grounds in Jiangsu coastal wetlands. Spring migration began on average on March 6 (SD:3 d) and ended on average on March 7 (SD:3 d) (Table 1). Autumn migration began on average on November 18 (SD:5 d) and ended on average on November 23 (SD:12 d) (Table 2). The birds exhibited limited stopovers in the migration routes. Migration distance differed among individuals, with No. 3 showing a markedly longer migration distance. Except for No. 4, which had a prolonged migration duration and lower migration speed due to a long stopover during autumn migration, migration speed and altitude were generally similar among individuals. Habitats used were dominated by intertidal mudflats in both breeding and wintering grounds, with core activity areas (50% activity range) accounting for 59.63% ~ 76.33%. However, the use of aquaculture ponds in breeding grounds (13.90% ~ 56.45%) was higher than that in wintering grounds (2.57% ~ 10.48%; F1, 22 = 10.856, P < 0.05) (Figs. 1, 2). [Conclusion] This study confirms that the breeding population of Eurasian Oystercatchers at Liaohe Delta is a short-distance migratory population, providing important guidance for the conservation of short-distance migratory breeding populations along China’s eastern coast.
