Abstract:[Objectives] Morphological and molecular genetic distance analyses were performed on 11 torrent glyptosternoid specimens collected from the Niangjiang Qu (Cona County) and Zhang Qu (Lhozhag County), Shannan City, Xizang Autonomous Region, China, during fish expeditions to the Himalayan drainages in 2025, aiming to identify and characterize the specimens. [Methods] Specimens were collected by gillnets. An integrative approach combining morphological and molecular analyses was employed for species characterization. Morphological identification was based on diagnostic features and morphometric measurements. MEGA11 was employed to determine the nucleotide composition, variable sites, and Kimura 2-parameter (K2P) genetic distances based on mitochondrial cytochrome b (Cyt b) gene fragments. Comparative sequences were retrieved from the GenBank database. Morphological and genetic comparisons were conducted among congeners of Parachiloglanis and Creteuchiloglanis. [Results] Although nearly 50% of the morphometric proportional characters of Parachiloglanis specimens from the Zhang Qu and Niangjiang Qu, Xizang, China differed from those of conspecific individuals from the Dangmechhu River in Bhutan, several key diagnostic traits—including the morphology and number of lateral line pores, the shape of the upper and lower jaw tooth bands, head length, and the connection pattern between the adipose fin and caudal fin—remained consistent between the populations. Moreover, the intraspecific genetic distance (0.18% ~ 0.39%) was markedly lower than the interspecific divergence level (Table 3). Accordingly, Parachiloglanis specimens distributed in the Niangjiang Qu and Zhang Qu basins of Xizang were identified as P. bhutanensis. Similarly, nearly half of the morphometric proportional ranges of Creteuchiloglanis specimens collected from the Niangjiang Qu and Zhang Qu, Xizang, China showed no overlap with those of C. bumdelingensis from the Dangmechhu River in Bhutan. Nevertheless, these specimens shared several crucial diagnostic characteristics, including the posterior labial fold extending to the base of the outer mental barbel, 16 branched pectoral-fin rays, the pectoral fin extending posteriorly beyond the pelvic-fin origin, an elongated adipose fin, and a deep caudal peduncle. Furthermore, the intraspecific genetic distance (0.29%) was distinctly lower than the interspecific divergence threshold (Table 5). On the basis of comprehensive analyses of morphological characteristics, morphometric proportions, and molecular genetic distances, the Creteuchiloglanis specimens collected from the Niangjiang Qu and Zhang Qu basins in China were confirmed as C. bumdelingensis. [Conclusion] Both species were recorded for the first time in China’s waters, representing two new distribution records of freshwater fish in China. This survey successfully extended the natural distribution ranges of Parachiloglanis and Creteuchiloglanis northward to the high-altitude upstream tributaries of Xizang, China. Notably, P. bhutanensis set a new altitudinal distribution record for the genus Parachiloglanis. These findings significantly enrich the existing knowledge on species diversity and geographical distribution of sisorid catfish in the Himalayan region. Furthermore, this study provides valuable scientific references for taxonomic research on fish fauna in transboundary rivers, for the research on the mechanisms underlying biodiversity evolution of fish in the Himalayan region, and for the conservation and rational management of regional aquatic resources.
